The Dan Rather Rule for answering reporters.

The Dan Rather Rule, presumably coined by CBS veteran news anchor Dan Rather, says there are only three legitimate responses to a reporter's question:

1) "Yes, I know the answer, and here it is." 

2) "No, I don't know the answer, but I'll try to find out." 

3) "Yes, I do know the answer, but I can't tell you."

And then there's a response once given me by a Russian spokesman:

4) "Yes, I could answer that, but then I'd have to kill you."
